First of all, let me start by saying this: "BeOS 5 PE Max Edition is a full Operating System."
It is not a Windows Program, it doesn't require Windows to run, it doesn't require Windows to install. In fact if you don't have Windows... that is fine also.
Many mistake the Max Edition installation with the Personal Edition Installation. The Personal Edition requires Windows to install because the operating system is already installed and configured with in a 500MB image file, and loaded using a trick from DOS (That is why it doesn't work in Windows ME, 2000 or XP without a boot disk). Also the Personal Install is limited to those 500MB. Max of course isn't.
The only thing another operating system is needed for is to create the bootable Installation CD. This CD, once created, is not readable by Windows or Linux because it contains a BFS file system that only BeOS recognizes. You can also buy a BeOS 5 PE Max Edition CD Rom here (http://www.iso4linux.com/index.php/cPath/28_31).
If a friend has a computer that has an Operating system that can burn CDs, it would do fine. Just follow the instructions found in Instructions on burning a BeOS Max CD.
In case you do have Windows, you will need to have a free partition to install BeOS. What is a free partition? It is unformatted disk space. How do you create such a partition? There are several ways. One is to foresee the need for a second OS and not to have Windows format all your Hard Disk space. In case you have already done that, you can use a partition splitter like fips (http://www.igd.fhg.de/~aschaefe/fips/) (Dos, Windows 9x/ME) or Partition Magic from Powerquest (http://www.powerquest.com/partitionmagic/) (Windows 9X/ME/2000/XP).
