Zeta 1.2 Upgrade CD

From Haiku Max Wiki

This article contains instruction on how to upgrade any beos version, from what ever it is to version 1.2 of Zeta using the Zeta 1.2 upgrade CD available here: Zeta 1.2 Upgrade ($16.95) (http://store.purplus.net/zeta12upgrade.html)

Pre-requirements

  • A copy of the Zeta 1.2 upgrade CD [1] (http://store.purplus.net/zeta12upgrade.html)
  • A BFS partition partition named Zeta .

This technique was discovered quite by accident. I was looking for a BeOS build that included gtk+-1.2.10 so that I could build some packages for BeOS/Zeta. After finding a BeOS developer edition, that included it, I proceeded to install it over Zeta on my machine which had Zeta-1.2 installed with "ZETA" being the name of the one partion which I did not change to BEOS. Upon completing the BeOS install and building a gtk+-1.2.10 package, I decided to reinstall Zeta to test the package, Remember, I did not change the partion name from "ZETA" when I installed BeOS developer edition. I then installed Zeta-1.2 (from my update cd) over BeOS without even thinking about it until after the install, when it dawned on me that I had just upgraded BeOS to Zeta with the update cd. So I thought I'd play around a bit more with various configuration's of the partion to see if it would work along with various BeOS builds. Every BeOS build, if the partion was named "ZETA" the upgrade disk would install Zeta-1.2, with no problem. I then tried installing Zeta-1.2 over a BeOS install with the partion named "BEOS", the Install of Zeta-1.2 would appear to be normal, HOWEVER, upon completing going thru what should have been all the packages being installed, and getting to the point in the installation where you choose to install a boot manager, upon selecting install Zeta boot manager, the installer could not find ANY partion, and said there was no OS installed, along with no partion. I ended up using a linux distro to repartion my hdd, I then started installing a BeOS version (Dano), and just formated the hdd to BFS, with no packages installed and the partion named "ZETA", and tried to install Zeta-1.2 on the partion, Once again it would go thru what you would think would be a complete install, only to be unable to find the partion when setting up the boot manager. I then wanted to confirm my finding, so I partioned my drive again using a linux installation disk, installed BeOS (Dano) with the Partion named "ZETA", and upon completing the BeOS installation, I then tried the Zeta-1.2 upgrade disk to install Zeta over BeOS, which worked fine. I was told that doing this technique without owning a copy of Zeta would be illegal, so you are warned (I have Zeta-1.0, along with Zeta-1.2 upgrade disk, purchased from purplus).
